Procrastination and Prioritizing

It is easy for the average student to become overwhelmed with course assignments, papers and presentations, and often the result of this is procrastination. Students with ADHD face even bigger challenges with these assignments and often feel they have plenty of time, so they put off beginning projects and papers, even if they do keep up with course readings and reviewing for tests. Other students procrastinate because they do not completely understand the directions for a project or paper, and feel uncomfortable staying after class or attending professor office hours to get clarification. Good executive functioning skills help students to prioritize and stay organized with these types of assignments, but ADHD students are at a disadvantage because these skills do not come naturally for them.

I suggest working with a tutor or academic coach to schedule daily time and weekly assignments, and planning to begin research projects and presentations early so students are not rushing and cramming at the last minute, (which often produces lower quality work). The student should let the advisor know that they have the ADD/ADHD diagnosis and they will assist with scheduling and finding professors who work best with their learning style. Their advisor will help them create a schedule that works with their best “learning and alertness” times of the day. Classes too early in the day or too late in the evening may not work for them.

Make sure to discuss online classes with the advisor before signing up for them. Some students with ADD find that they can manage these courses because they can complete the work whenever they want, as long as they meet the deadlines. The assignments are usually laid out on Blackboard along with tests and projects, but students usually will not be given access to the course material until each specific week. Keeping up with due dates is critical for online classes, as once the submission date and time passes the portal is usually closed.
